~Thirteen Years Ago~
As the sun begins to set, several thugs attack a small carriage. On the ground lies the bodies of the guards that tried to protect the carriage, along with some of the bodies of the thugs. A well dressed man that was in the carriage tries to fight of the bandits, but he was apparently no match for them, and quickly loses the fight.
"Please...don't kill my wife and child. You can take all our belongings but please spare them..." But the leader just looked at him with a cold stare and finished him off. The mother and her child just stayed in the carriage, cowering as the thieves moved closer to the caravan. The two decided the exit the other way, but as they ran, a flying arrow strikes the woman at the back, knocking her down to the ground.
"Mother!!!" the child cries and rushes to his mother. "No... You must...r-run... Get away from here... Y-you must...live..." At that moment, the woman's life faded away. The young child couldn't move. He just sat there, holding his mother in his arms.
"What shall we do with the kid, boss? Shall we finish him off?", said an underling. "No... Let's torture him first. I want him to experience a slow and painful death.", replies the leader with an evil grin on his face.
Meanwhile, in the depths of the forest, a man wanders around hunting for something to eat. But as he moves around the place, he catches a familiar scent in the air. Blood...and lots of it. But where's it coming from? The man starts moving around, trying to follow the scent. He then finds himself in the area where the carriage was. What happened here? Looks like these people were attacked by thieves. Better look for survivors.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" says one thief. "Never mind about that. Let's just kill him," another says. The two bandits drew their weapons and started dashing towards the man. "Humph! Fools..." The man says silent as he draws out his weapons, dual dagger-like weapons.
The young child starts coughing up blood after the severe beating he took for the thugs. The boss looks down on the kid and yawns. "This kid is not fun. Let's just finish him off now." The gang leader pulls out his sword and raises it up in the air, ready to deliver the final blow. Suddenly, a panicked underling starts running towards the boss.
"Boss, we have a problem! There's a mysterious man fighting with the men. He's already killed five of them and on his way here!"
"What! Are you saying you guys can't get rid of a single man! Dispose of him quickly! You two, go with him."
But as soon as the three henchmen moved a few step away from their boss, the warrior surprised attacked them, quickly making short work of them. He stands still looking at the last opponents standing and the young child lying on the floor near the boss.
"You're spineless," the warrior said to the boss "You killed the every person here, but instead of killing the child, you and your men torture and beat him."
"Humph! So what! I can do whatever I what. I don't care about the child! As for you, I'm gonna finish you off now!" The gang leader tightly grasps his sword in hand and starts charging at the man. The man just dodged and blocked the waves of attacks of the other.
"Ha! Is defending all you can do! You're nothing compared to me!" The warrior just smiles at the leader and continues dodging. The boss starts getting angry, and starts swinging his sword wildly in desperation to land a blow on the warrior. Suddenly, the boss makes a fatal error and left his guard open, allowing the warrior to land a finishing blow on him. The gang leader just falls to the ground, left to lie in a pool of his own blood.
The warrior then approaches the child and holds him in his arms. He checks to see if the child still has a heart beat, and is relieved to discover that he's still alive. The child then regains consciousness and looks at the man.
"Did you beat up the bad men?" the child asks.
"Yes. Don't worry about them. They're gone now. What you name kid?" he says in reply.
"K-Kojiro...Ryuen," responds the child.
"Kojiro...that's a nice name. I'm gonna take care of those wounds you have. You can stay at my place. I'll train you so that you'll never be picked on by people like them again." The man then starts carrying Koji towards his home in the forest.
"By the way, mister, what's your name?"
"It's Yutaro...but you can refer to me as sensei."
~Twelve Years Later~
Within the depths of the forest, a young man is found training in the forest. As he practices what his master had taught him, an old man walks into the area. "Kojiro, that's enough training. It's already late. Let's head back home."
"Hai, Yutaro-sensei," the young man replies and puts his weapons away while following Yutaro back to the cottage.
"So...how was your training, Kojiro?"
"It was fine. I've become quite proficient in using the weapons you gave me. At this rate, I' might even become more powerful than you."
"I know you will," says the old master. As the two approach their little home, Yutaro notices some people at the front of their cottage. "Hm...there seems to be some people near our home. They appear to be treasure hunters. We better find out what they want."
The two of them approach the small group of people. They see the two and also walk towards them. "What is your business here? If it's treasure you want you won't find any here," says Yutaro.
"Cut the crap, old man! We know there is an hidden shrine around here, and we also know that you've been guarding it. Tell us now where the shrine is, if you know what's good for you!" replies the band leader.
"Gr... How dare you talk to my master like that! I oughta..."
"Stop it, Kojiro," his master interrupts, "Hold your temper! As for you people, that place is not for the likes of you. It is not treasure but something dangerous that lies in there. Leave this place at once. Your journey is wasted." The band of treasure hunters look at one another and then one replies, "Fine then. We will leave this place. We apologize for our behavior earlier. We'll be on our way now." The group then starts walking away from the area.
One of the explorers looks at the leader, "Boss. Are we just gonna walk away? We usually..."
"Damare! I know what I'm doing. We'll keep our eye on them. If they decide to go anywhere, we'll be right behind them. They'll lead us right to the shrine."
"Hehehe... a brilliant idea boss," says another.
"Yutaro-sensei, what is the shrine that they speak of? Is it true that you've been guarding this place?" asks Kojiro. His master stares at the young man then slowly starts making his way back into their home. "That's...none of your concern, Kojiro. That place...is not to be visited by the likes of them. That's all."
"Wakarimanutsa, sensei."
"Well anyway, let's get something to eat. It's almost dinnertime."
Later that night...
Yutaro remains awake and starts drinking some sake. As he drinks, he starts looking back into his past...the dark past that had been haunting him for years. He then gets up, takes his weapons and exits the cottage. Kojiro wakes up and notices that his master isn't in the house. He looks outside and sees his master wandering into the forest.
I wonder where he's going at this time. Better keep my eye on him. After all, he isn't as skilled as he used to be.
Kojiro follows him secretly, guarding him in case anything happens. As the two progress through the forest, they pass through a place that Koji has never been before. Yutaro then stops in front of a cave. "Kojiro, I know you're following me. Come out here." The young student gets out of the shadows and looks at his master, "Your senses are keen as usual. But still, if you sensed me earlier, why didn't you try to lose me?" Yutaro paused for awhile before responding, "Come inside. I want to show you something." The two walk inside the dark cave. Lowe reaches for a torch near the entrance and lights it. As the two walk deeper, Yutaro lights the other torches lined up on the walls. At the end of the tunnel, Kojiro sees a huge door. Yutaro places his hand on the door while chanting in an unfamiliar language. Suddenly the door opens up, revealing a shrine inside. At the end of the room is an altar with a crystal on it. As the two walk further in the room, Kojiro senses a dark power being emitted by the orb.
"What is that thing, master?"
"The Rune of Absolute Darkness commonly known as the True Shadow Rune. It gives the bearer the power to control the darkness, but it can be a very destructive rune if not used carefully."
"How do you know so much about this rune?"
"Because I used to bear it. For twenty years I possessed this rune on my right hand, and in those twenty years I killed hundreds of people. Before I lived a life of seclusion in the forest, I was a mercenary whose only purpose was to fight. I didn't care who was my opponent as long as I finished my mission. But as time passed, the ghosts of those I killed haunted me. Night after night, they would torment me until I couldn't stand it anymore. I then decided to seal the rune here using an ancient Sindar technique and retired from being a mercenary permanently. I became afraid that this rune would fall in the hands of someone with evil intentions, so I swore to myself that I would protect this rune from anyone who would want obtain its dark powers."
After Yutaro had told his story, someone was clapping from behind them. The two looked back and saw the treasure hunters they met earlier. "That was a very interesting story, old man. Very interesting indeed. The Rune of Absolute Darkness, huh? I remember that there are 27 True Runes in the world, and it looks like I found one of them. If I get my hands on that rune, I would be almighty and immortal at the same time. Thank you for leading me here, but it looks like we won't be needing you two anymore!" The small band of treasure hunters brought out their weaponry and surrounded the young man and his master. Koji looks over at his master, "Kuso! I knew these guys were up to no good. I should have been more careful."
"It's not your fault, Kojiro," Yutaro replies, "I'm the one that was careless. It's 6 on 2. Looks like the odds are slightly against us. Are you up to it?"
"Don't worry about me, sensei. I should be the one asking you that." The two take out their weapons and prepare themselves to engage the enemies.
The battle rages on for several minutes, and both student and master struggle to survive the fight. A few more minutes pass and both of them managed to kill a total of four enemies, making the fight a two on two battle. Yutaro starts fighting with the leader of the group while Kojiro took on the last follower. At first, Yutaro wasn't having any trouble in the fight, but he then started becoming weaker as time passed. Sensei! Kojiro shouts in his mind when he noticed that his master wasn't feeling good. He tries to go and assist his master, but his enemy took advantage of his low guard and was able to knock Kojiro with enough force to make him to fall to the ground. Yutaro becomes too weakened to fight due to his condition, and his opponent quickly disarms the elder man of his weapons.
"Looks like you lose, old man. But before I kill you, I'll let you witness the death of your student," the leader says with a maniacal laugh following after it. Yutaro looks over at Koji who is still knocked out by the blow he took. He then reaches for his pocket and takes out some smoke bombs, tossing them near himself and the man near him. The two are then engulfed in smoke, and the leader becoming temporarily blinded. Yutaro then uses the last bit of his strength and rushes to his student as the other man brings his sword down on him. The sword slashes something, and drops of blood fall to the floor. Kojiro manages to open his eyes, still feeling a little dizzy. He then sees his master standing in front of him, "S-Sensei..." he utters then looks at his feet. A small pool of blood forms under him and blood drips from his master's body. "Sensei!" Kojiro shouts as Yutaro collapses to the ground. Koji sits there motionless as he holds the body of his fallen master. The smoke around the group's leader finally clears, and he looks in the direction of the young male.
"Tch! I was hoping to finish that old fool off personally. Oh well..." the leader says with a evil smirk on his face. Kojiro slowly puts his master on the ground and stands back on his feet, "Old...fool...? Old fool?! You really have no heart, do you?! Your not human... You don't deserve to live... I'm gonna...I'm gonna...KILL YOU!!!" Suddenly, a dark aura gathers around the young warrior's right hand...the same aura that was being emitted by the rune. He looks at his right hand and sees a strange sign on it. The last follower tries rushing and attacks Kojiro, but violet eyed male just looks at the man with a cold, dark stare, as if he was possessed by the rune, raises his right hand up and unleashes a black energy projectile that cuts through the guy.
The leader gets a shocked and scared look on his face, drops his sword, and starts running towards the shrine's exit. Kojiro turns towards the leader and raises his right hand again, and fires another projectile towards the leaders direction. The projectile strikes the man's leg, knocking him down to the ground. The young man walks towards the leader that's now crawling towards the exit, leaving a trail of blood as he moves. The leader almost made it to the exit, but Sion got to him first.
"No! Please...don't kill me! I'm begging you! S-Spare my life!" The leader continued to grovel, but his words weren't heard by Kojiro. Koji just raised his hand up once more and casted a powerful spell that destroyed the cowardly man, leaving no trace of his body in the area. At the same time, Yutaro manages to open his eyes and sees his pupil using the cursed rune. The Rune of Absolute Darkness... Does that mean that Kojiro has awaken the rune? Koji turns around and sees his master, later turning back to normal and rushes to him.
"Sensei...What's happening to me? Why do I possess the power of the rune?"
"The rune...has chosen you as its new bearer..."
"I don't understand, master. Why did it choose me?"
"Its because...of your...heart. You allowed...your dark emotions...to...take control of...you. The r-rune...responded to that darkness in you. The rune derives...its p-power from the...negative...emotions in a person's...heart, and slowly takes control of h-his mind. Kojiro...Y-You mustn't lose control of that rune... Don't allow y-your negative emotions...get the best of you. Also, don't let that r-rune fall in the wrong hands. Y-you must...protect that rune at all costs."
"I understand, Sensei."
Yutaro then smiles at Kojiro, "You're a s-strong young man, Kojiro... Raising you as my own son all these years...were the best times I had in my entire life. Goodbye, Koji...ro..."
Kojiro just sat there, holding his master in his arms as tears trickled down his face. He wept there for a few seconds, then picked Yutaro up and buried him near the shrine. He returns to the cottage to change his now bloody clothes. He also takes 'Anei Shikon', the twin katars that his master used to wield, and leaves the forest to go on a journey while protecting the True Rune he bears.

Nicknames: Koji, Ryu, Koryu
Age: 18, but stopped aging at the age of 17 due to the True Rune he bears
Birthplace: Unknown, but was raised in some forest in the land of Dunan
Personality: A kind yound man with a strong sense of justice. He can't stand seeing innocent people get hurt. He values his friends a lot, and would do anything to protect them. At times he could be cold and soft spoken, but he's generally a nice guy at heart.
In battle, he has an agressive and straightforward fighting style. He tries not to give the opponent any time to attack. If circumstance dictates a somewhat more passive style, he'll observe his opponents abilities for a while, as he waits for a good opening to strike. As much as possible, he tries to avoid killing his opponents, but will do so if he has no other option.
